  • 01/About

Harlem is America's Renaissance around ideas and innovation.

There is a unique, historical richness in communities steeped in culture, art and innovation and the human spirit's capacity to hope and dream.

It is this idea that gives birth to the 2012 TEDxHarlem event. Join us as we present the first TEDxHarlem event titled "Creating Waves." It is a theme that examines the notion of an idea happening in one place but the impact being felt somewhere else.

We will bring this theme to life through the exploration of five topics areas by remarkable individuals across diverse industries:

    1. Mobility and Connectivity
    2. Built Environments
    3. Health & Wellness
    4. Civic Engagement
    5. S.T.E.M./ S.T.E.A.M.

At the conference, we will hear from engaging speakers and see exciting performers who broadly demonstrate a passion around these topics, plus explore ideas that are re-shaping and re-defining communities, cities and individuals today and tomorrow.

    The Goals of TEDxHarlem

    1. To inspire - deliver a spark that creates dialogue and participation around ideas
    2. To activate - create momentum and excitement that propels purpose-driven action
    3. To shift - move individuals from seeing the limitations to seeing the possibilities
    4. To transform - evolution from a previous way of thinking into something new, exciting and challenging

    What is TEDx?

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxHarlem, where x=independently organized TED event. Fetterman said, "This is the tragic end result of what happens when a region, a town, a street, a house is effectively allowed to fail." He's a man whose dreams for this shattered town matches his mammoth figure. The 40-year-old Fetterman wears Braddock's past, literally, on his sleeves -- the zip code tattooed on one arm, the dates of murders on the other.
